今日は、2007年6月ハーバード大学卒業式におけるBill Gates氏のスピーチについて書かせていただきます。

私はBill Gates氏に興味を持ったことがなかったのですが、このスピーチを見て、氏のユーモアのセンス、スピーチの上手さに感動しました。話の面白さ、声の明瞭さ、間の取り方の上手さ等、TOEFL Speaking Sectionの勉強をしている方にとってとても素晴らしい勉強の題材になると思います。

President Bok, former President Rudenstine, incoming President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, parents, and especially, the graduates:

Speechの冒頭部分です。関係者の名前を並べて、お礼を述べています。最後に、”especially, the graduates”（特に卒業生の皆様）とありますが、これは大学（ハーバード大学）の卒様式でのスピーチですので、当然ですね。

I’ve been waiting more than 30 years to say this: “Dad, I always told you I’d come back and get my degree.”

風太郎訳（以下全て私の訳です）：
30年間、このセリフを述べる機会を待ち焦がれていました。「お父さん、いつも言ったじゃないか。大学に戻って学位を取るって。」

Bill Gatesは、このスピーチをする前に、ハーバード大学から名誉学位を授与されました。

の記事の中に、以下の記述がありますので、ご参考までに。

Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, will speak at Harvard University's commencement ceremony in June and, like all commencement speakers, will receive an honorary degree from the institution.

“honorary degree”で「名誉学位」という意味になります。そういえば、北野武氏も明治大学から名誉学位を授与されていましたね。

I want to thank Harvard for this timely honor. I’ll be changing my job next year … and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume.

訳：
このタイミングの良い名誉（＝学位を与えられたこと）に関して、ハーバード大学に感謝したいと思います。来年私は転職をします。なので、履歴書に「大卒」と書けると助かります。

Bill Gates氏は2008年にMicrosoft社でパートタイムになり、"Gates and Melinda Gates Foundation"にてフルタイムで働いているようです。自分で設立した組織の間で籍を変えるだけなので、学歴にこだわる必要はないのですが、冗談として「大卒」資格があると嬉しい、と発言しているのだと思います。

I applaud the graduates today for taking a much more direct route to your degrees. For my part, I’m just happy that the Crimson has called me “Harvard’s most successful dropout.”

Bill Gatesは「ハーバードで最も成功を収めた退学者」だそうです。（笑）

I guess that makes me valedictorian of my own special class … I did the best of everyone who failed.

訳：
このこと（＝ハーバードで最も成功を収めた退学者であること）のおかげで、私は属するクラス（＝中退者クラス！）における卒業生総代(valedictorian)になることが出来ました。失敗した人の中（中退者）で最も頑張ったからです。

自分が大学を中退していることを笑いに昇華できているのが見事ですね。

But I also want to be recognized as the guy who got Steve Ballmer to drop out of business school. I’m a bad influence.

Steve Ballmer氏は、2000年にMicrosoftのCEOになった方ですね。“I’m a bad influence.” 斬れる英語です。「私は悪い影響だ。」「私は周囲に悪い影響を与える人だ。」という意味です。自分が大学を辞めただけでなく、Steve Ballmer氏をビジネススクールから退学させた、と。

That’s why I was invited to speak at your graduation.

訳：
だから（＝a bad influenceだから）私は皆さんの卒業式で喋るように招待されたんです。

If I had spoken at your orientation, fewer of you might be here today.

訳：
もし皆さんのオリエンテーション（大学入学時のオリエンテーション）で喋っていたならば、ここにいる皆さんの人数はもっと少ないかもしれません。

仮定法の文です。私は悪だから、入学式には呼ばれなかった、と。

文頭の部分”If I had spoken..”の部分の”had”があまり聴こえません。”h”の音は、会話においては消える傾向にあります。

Harvard was just a phenomenal experience for me. Academic life was fascinating. I used to sit in on lots of classes I hadn’t even signed up for. And dorm life was terrific. I lived up at Radcliffe, in Currier House. There were always lots of people in my dorm room late at night discussing things, because everyone knew I didn’t worry about getting up in the morning. That’s how I came to be the leader of the anti-social group. We clung to each other as a way of validating our rejection of all those social people.

Bill Gates氏は、自称” the leader of the anti-social group.”「反社会的グループのリーダー」だったそうです。（笑）そういえば、私にも似たような過去があります。まあ、Bill Gatesほど大物ではないですけどね。ははは。

Radcliffe was a great place to live.

Radcliffeは名作”Love Story”にも登場する名前です。
